Tauranga Activities and Attractions

At the heart of Tauranga (one of New Zealand’s most desirable lifestyle cities) is our City Centre and waterfront. Every entertainment, shopping and culinary experience you would expect of a modern city is here.

Fabulous cafes, restaurants and bars line the waterfront and the inner-city streets, where international cuisine, succulent Pacific-Rim choices, fabulous coffee and an awesome atmosphere awaits. Join in the fun and frivolity at bars and nightclubs during the evenings for live music, drinks and dancing or tuck yourself away in a quiet restaurant and savour the flavours.

If shopping is your pleasure, you’ll find no shortage of excellent retail outlets to browse through – whatever you’re looking for, Tauranga City will likely have a store that stocks it! Tauranga also has a thriving ‘creative’ community and there are a great number of galleries, art markets and boutique stores where you can enjoy the quality art and crafts that we produce.

Every Easter, the main city roads in Tauranga and Mount Maunganui are closed off to vehicles as the annual Jazz festival trumpets into town. This 4-day long festival draws thousands to dance, drink and enjoy the sounds of live jazz bands performing.

Local Attractions

  • Mount Maunganui
20 minute drive from Cameron Thermal Motel
Mount Maunganui (just a 20 minute drive from Cameron Thermal Motel) is famous for its miles of azure-blue beaches. The 'main' Mount Beach comes alive every summer as thousands of holidaymakers flock to the white sands to swim, surf and just relax in the sun. Professional Lifeguards patrol many of the beaches along the Mount Maunganui coastline during summer months. Bring your surf board to enjoy the many great breaks, or head out with a professional instructor who can offer you the thrill of riding your first wave. Mount Maunganui also boasts New Zealand’s first artificial Surf Reef. When construction is fully completed, it will provide world-class surfing conditions and attract international surfing competitions. If surfing isn't your thing, you might like to try BloKarting – an innovative new land-based sailing sport. Whiz along the flat sands of our beaches with the salt spray in your hair and a huge smile on your face! Up for some more excitement? Try parasailing, paragliding or kite-boarding along the beach. Of course, you can always forgo the activity and just dig your toes in the soft sand and let relaxation take over. Mount Maunganui itself stands proudly at the end of the Mount Maunganui peninsula, with the Pacific Ocean crashing on its eastern side and the calm waters of the Tauranga Harbour lapping its feet to the West. A scenic walk around the 'Mount' will take you about one hour – with secluded beaches, rock pools and more to explore along the way. If you’re fit and energetic, the steep track to the summit of the Mount beckons, rewarding you with panoramic views out across the Pacific Ocean (you can even see White Islands steaming volcano on a clear day!) to numerous off-shore islands, across the Tauranga Harbour, over the city and out to the Kaimai Ranges. Excellent cafes, restaurants and bars complement the stunning scenery at Mount Maunganui and there are a great number of shopping experiences on offer in the town centre also.
  • Rivers and Lakes
15min Drive from Cameron Thermal Motel
As blessed as the Tauranga area is with oceans and harbours, we also boast many rivers and lakes to explore. Mclarens Falls Park, just a fifteen minute drive from Cameron Thermal Motel, is a gorgeous spot to spend an afternoon. Mclarens Falls offers many large fresh-water swimming holes surrounded by giant boulders to sun yourself on. There are many picnic and BBQ areas in the park, and the lake beckons you to kayak, swim or just enjoy the scenery. River-Rafting also happens here in-season, and the experience is a white-knuckle adventure you’ll never forget. The Wairoa River (another fifteen minute drive from Cameron Thermal Motel) is a far more languid waterway – and the best place to enjoy all that the Wairoa River has to offer is at Waimarino. This adventure park, set right on the banks of the river, has something for all the family to enjoy. Explore the river on a kayak, canoe or paddle-boat, soak in the heated pools, tackle the climbing walls, and enjoy the flying fox, kayak-slide and diving boards. The team at Waimarino also operate guided river tours and a glow-worm tour.
  • Golf in Tauranga Bay of Plenty
Keen golfers will be pleased to hear that the Bay of Plenty is home to more than ten excellent golf courses, and that Cameron Thermal Motel is just a five minute drive from two of these – the Tauranga Golf Course and Oropi Golf Course. This easy-walking course is set amidst park-like grounds and mature trees and is a joy to play. Mount Maunganui offers two Golf courses, both just a fifteen minute drive from Cameron Thermal Motel.
